Nebraska
Director: Alexander Payne
Country: USA
Year: 2013
IMDB
Average Rating: 4.3
There are many forms of ailment that are becoming ever increasingly highlighted by various forms of media as to their effect on people and friends and family who have to deal with the changes in life. "An acutely observed portrayal of ageing, families and understanding"
With 'Nebraska', the subject in question is dementia suffered by Woody (Bruce Dern). The film certainly appealed to many members. "A beautiful exploration of tongue tied inability to communicate emotions with characters that remained totally believable."and "An engaging film that had humour, depth, poignancy, much food for thought". "Gently, genuine and well crafted - most enjoyable".
The film's satirical angle was also picked out, "An evocative & sensitive film with such humour", " The surreal comedy was first class.", "Very enjoyable, funny and strangely delicate."
For the first time perhaps as many comments were made on the imagery and cinematography than ever before. "The monochrome cinematography added to the melancholic atmosphere & backdrop". "The photography brought home the huge distances people have to travel in the USA. A thoroughly enjoyable film". "As a photographer I found the cinematograph both excellent and enchanting."
One or two were a little sceptical of the films qualities. "Bit amateurist & sentimental", "Interesting. A bit slow and long", "Overly sentimental" and the most detailed response, which perhaps includes reasons as to why it didn't appeal all round "I found it a bit formulaic, trying to make us like unlikeable characters (especially the Mother). I've seen too many films of this type that concentrate on small town, middle-America and how run down it is. Try a different setting, but why not make it positive, exciting, up-lifting. This film had some small redemption at the end, but it was a long time coming..."
However, although not the highest score of the season, 'Nebraska' in general left its mark as a way of looking positively at a tricky condition. "I loved this film. The surreal comedy was first class", "A sweet family romance - gritty & real. Funny & cranky. Loved the music", "Another piece of brilliant cinema. Great story line and wonderful characters."
